In The Know: Sixpence in her shoe.
Thanks to Tracy our advanced level vocal class coverage on Folk/Country music took a whole new perspective.
Angeline had suggested trying a song by Carrie Underwood titled Just A Dream out and we were working on the highs and the lows and then we realised nobody really took the lyrics seriously enough. So I asked them to find out what 'Sixpence in her shoe, something borrowed, something new...' meant, and thanks to Tracy, we are enlightened.
Here's what she sent us:
Something old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.
A sixpence is a coin that was minted in Britain from 1551 to 1967. It was made of silver and worth six pennies. So this wedding tradition is definitely English, and many sources say that it began in the Victorian era.
Each item in this poem represents a good-luck token for the bride. If she carries all of them on her wedding day, her marriage will be happy. "Something old" symbolizes continuity with the bride's family and the past. "Something new" means optimism and hope for the bride's new life ahead. "Something borrowed" is usually an item from a happily married friend or family member, whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride. The borrowed item also reminds the bride that she can depend on her friends and family.
As for the colorful item, blue has been connected to weddings for centuries. In ancient Rome, brides wore blue to symbolize love, modesty, and fidelity. Christianity has long dressed the Virgin Mary in blue, so purity was associated with the color. Before the late 19th century, blue was a popular color for wedding gowns, as evidenced in proverbs like, "Marry in blue, lover be true."
And finally, a silver sixpence in the bride's shoe represents wealth and financial security. It may date back to a Scottish custom of a groom putting a silver coin under his foot for good luck. For optimum fortune, the sixpence should be in the left shoe. These days, a dime or a copper penny is sometimes substituted, and many companies sell keepsake sixpences for weddings.

Replugged Music presents: Beatboxing Course!
As with all other Replugged Music courses, we seek to create and re-create. The art of vocal percussion, as its name implies is about creating/re-creating grooves patterns, and sounds, which isn't necessarily confined to sounds from the drum set, with the human throat, tongue, mouth and voice.
It has a long history which some have researched and speculated to originate from world music, and most notably from the North Indian 'bols' and South Indian 'solkattu'.
Another likely origin, is Kouji 口技, with its earliest records in Shandong Province more than 2000 years ago during the warring states period. Kouji performance is made up of mimicry, dialogue (vocal interaction), humour and singing, which are essentially elements of Beatboxing.
It is thus not surprising that Beatboxing, a form of Vocal percussion bears some if not all of the above characteristics. Beatboxing, however, stands out on its own, and is an evolving form of street culture and art, with strong relations to the hip-hop culture. Like, Kouji, it may and often does involve some form of singing, or 'scratching' (turntablism), and mimicry or simulation of brass and string instruments.
Replugged Music is excited and proud to present our latest addition to this family of pop arts this year, Vocal Percussion (BeatBoxing) Course. Calling especially all singers and drummers, this may be a time to discover your unreleased potential in your varied musical interests!

Esplanade Presents: FIRECRACKERS!
FIRECRACKERS!
happy to be creating a few sparks with the handsome and very talented Yeos ( James Yeo on piano + Jeremy Yeo on percussion + Clarence Yeo on guitar) this eve of Lunar New Year, I'm looking forward to countdown more than i'd ever been.
unless you're expecting a traditional cornucopia of indeed very respectfully hyped-up gongs, suo na-s, or lion-dancing for this festive season, you will be rather thrilled to be serenaded under the sweet o' moonlight, with music from the 30's - 70's, mainly mandarin, peppered with a lil' shanghai modern blue in your cheongsam.
sit by us, and enjoy this evening of rest under the stars with my handsome band, as we take you back in reflection of vivid memories in yellow pictures, before the brand new beginning of a lunar new year.
