完美之旅 (the perfect journey) reveals snapshots of her life, via the songs she has written, and of which 4 of the songs, fully-arranged. Evolving from her early days signed as a recording artiste to the storyteller she aspires to be, through stories of dear ones and also her own, that become every song that writes her, and with each song, she gains a new color, medium to her musical palette.

The different layers of harmonies, voicings in the compositions reveal stubborn intricacies of her thoughts. And the delicate but luring pulse, the heartbeat of each specific moment that moves her, be it celebratory, whimsical, or melancholic is what she hopes to share with everyone.

Traveling across genres, known to be electro-acoustic, folk, alternative, jazz, and contemporary, she is determined to paint, to smudge, to ink, to lightly dot each imagination to connect her story to yours.

Juliet Pang is a Singaporean singer-songwriter who appreciates jazz, folk, alternative, improvisational and experimental music. She loves the surprises in melodies teasing to be written, and endeavors to capture these stories through songwriting and live performances. Amongst notable projects that she has undertaken, some interesting projects include recording for movie theme song for Eating Air (吃風）, ensemble roles in SRT productions, Forbidden City and The Snow Queen, as well as played Lucia (lead) in an I-theatre Production based on Max Lucado’s book, ‘You’re Special’, and more recently, 'Smile' in a jazz compilation album under S2S. She looks forward to writing more music that encourage the spirit of love with new ways, new people, new stories. Look out for her original debut, 完美之旅that will be released in December 2010. The album will feature Every Christmas Carol, one of the originals from the album, this Christmas.

In 2011, she looks for new colors in the new season to paint these new adventures she will make with you.

A Vocal Jam

Ring in the Christmas season with this fun and interactive programme from The A Cappella Society. In two shows; one for children, one for youth and the young-at-heart, A Cappella groups will bring the season's music closer to you.

Expect to hear all your favourite carols and tunes in an intimate and informal setting. But be prepared to be active yourself and to sing along!

Following the success of the first installment of Christmas Vocal Jam with nanu, this year’s concert will present The A Cappella Society’s Pop Choir, guest singers and groups who will all add to the merry-making and yuletide cheer by bringing to you much loved Christmas favourites sung in traditional and pop a cappella style.

Juz B, Champions of the A Cappella Championships (Open Category) will grace the stage for the evening show.

In this concert, the audience is the star of the show. From singing to toe tapping, finger-pointing and boogying the afternoon or night away, everyone is promised an enjoyable and memorable time during this interactive showcase.

NEA(National Environment Agency) will be holding an eco-music challenge 2010 !

These are reasons why NEA is strongly promoting this challenge to budding songwriters!

1. Good publicity exposure
2. A great chance for us to show our appreciation and support for the environment.
3. There is attractive worth of prizes worth $13K for the finalists.
4. A good opportunity for the finalists to perform at the Eco Music Festival 2010 Concert, held in Nov’10.

Here's a few minutes before catching a show, apparently a display of colours and sound. We'd see. It should be good.

I pondered over the purpose of music.

Oftentimes, it ends at the accomplishment of a certain song, a certain instrument (if there ever can be!), or a certain style of music, or even a certain season in one's musical journey.

But WHERE do we really go with it?

This week has been an eye-opener for me.

Music in itself, as beautiful a means of articulating thought and emotions, can never be an end if its beauty is to be sustained.

We are thankful to have an opportunity in sharing our gifts in music and music learning, so that music could Through the amazing eyes of these talents, express their hearts, encouraging, comforting, rejoicing.

Many thanks to our organisers, NIE and Simei Care Cte for inviting our student singers to perform for their event. This is an extremely meaning event and we enjoyed serving, entertaining the visitors as they mingled at the Job Fair/Flea Market.

Greetings from the Mosaic Music Festival team! As part of our festival, we would like to share with you on our Bright Young Things program which aims to identify, nurture and support the next generation of jazz talents in Singapore.

For 2010, we are introducing for the first time, an audition process, in which a maximum of 10 participants will be selected. These young talents, aged between 15 and 25 years old, will then work with assigned instructor-mentors towards performing at the festival. They will also get opportunities to attend events and meet the festival artists.

Beautiful Noises.

It's funny how 'noise' which had a connotation of dirty or unpleasant or if possibly valued by any form of standard as 'useless' sounds, can be so desired in various kinds of experimental music these days.

I, for one, am in love with all organic noises. Someone's sneeze, a scratch, rustle of the leaves... they put me at ease.

The falling of leaves is possibly how we can imagine snowfalls be like.:)

Chinatown Showdown: A singing competition

Chinatown Heritage Board presents Chinatown Showdown 2: (excerpt from their email)

This competition is Singapore's unique singing battle to set the contestants through rounds of heart pounding and extreme singing. Get enthralled in this battle where contestants game up to oust out the poor, with our high profile judges soundin off deadly bells and giving the craziest comments.

To briefly outline the competition:

1. Contestants will have to sing a song for at least 3 minutes (any type of song)
2. While singing on stage, judges will decide whether contestant is suitable to get into the finals with their 'deadly' bells.
3. With no bells being rung by the judges within the 3 minutes, contestant will qualify for finals

Try getting past our judges and you stand to win $6000 worth of cash prizes!

In the style of a light variety show, Sherman and Vivian will once again host this show as we ride through an evening of colourful renditions of Christmas songs as well as other popular numbers, celebrating this season of love. We are also excited about the alternative talents our students will be sharing with us, which include dance, movement and song-signing. Following up with Original Souls 2009, we are once again delighted to share their original compositions this year. Music beyond boundaries, a Christmas more sparkly than white.

The month of October is internationally celebrated as Breast Cancer
Awareness Month - commonly referred to as BCAM.

Here, in Singapore, at least 1300 women are diagnosed with breast cancer
every year. This number is increasing by 3% annually. Nearly 250 women die
from breast cancer in Singapore, every year. But Breast Cancer need not
mean a death sentence, if women are more aware of the benefits of regular
breast screening and measures that lower the risk of breast cancer.

The Breast Unit of KK Women's and Children's Hospital has undertaken
various initiatives to spread this message to the women of Singapore.

Towards this end, they are running a Song Writing Competition, called BCAM
JAM.

Through this contest, they aim to derive songs that will encourage patients
of breast cancer, celebrate survivors of the disease, and inspire greater
consciousness among other audiences. The contest is open till 5 October
2009.

为了推广本地独立音乐文化，叶敦鸿在音乐领域翻滚10年后，第一次为自己，为新加坡独立音乐人以及独立新秀，筹办的一场中型户外音乐会 - <<独立万岁!!!>>。

没有五光十色的舞台灯效，没有百万乐队的伴奏；有的只是最具诚意的歌声和一颗颗充满热忱的心，站在舞台为您呈献充满生命力的创作和演唱。

独立派的精神是不屈不挠、亲力亲为、屏着各自对音乐的信念和理念，勇往直前开创一片能够让属于自己的音乐自由翱翔的天空。叶敦鸿希望能够从小做起，计划每一年都能够办<<独立万岁!!!>>这一项演出，把独立音乐人集合起来，推广新加坡中文独立音乐文化。

今年的音乐会将于MICA Building Atrium, 20/09/2009, 3pm – 5pm 呈献。音乐会上您将一次过目睹4位土生土长的新加坡独立歌手和乐团的现场实力演出。叶敦鸿除了演唱多首自己的作品，也会和其他演唱嘉宾合唱自己的创作。音乐会演唱嘉宾也将为大家带来更多精彩演出。他们包括了独立乐团讨闹派，独立新人梁丽怡Lizz和跨越中英两独立音乐界的独立美声男歌手Matthew Quek。

叶敦鸿为了这一次的演唱，更招兵买马凑了一组独立领域不容错过的鬼才乐团- Easy Band. Easy Band是叶敦鸿为乐团取的名称。乐团的特点是团员都是舞台经验丰富的自由或独立音乐人，当中都多才多艺，能屈能伸。他们这次应邀集合的主要目的就是要为独立音乐领域尽一份力。长远的来说，叶敦鸿希望独立领域有了Easy Band，独立歌手办起各式各样的演唱时，在得到这支鬼才乐团的鼎力相助下会更加Easy!!!

On behalf of Replugged Music, we apologise for the cancellation of the programme due to poor judgement, and lack of integrity from Capitaland and Event organisers involved.

Above all, we hope that all lessons have been learnt on keeping the musicians' dignity at all times, and remembering our art cannot be replaced, and how effortlessly ignorance only reveals itself in the face of a confrontation.

They have offered us no concrete explanations and like a poor breakup, they have continued to push their blame on each other. Bevlyn, Zhaohao and I walk away knowing we have made our point.

Face it, the music scene is Singapore is far from gaining its recognition and respect. But we hope that you'd attempt to walk away feeling more motivated than ever to fight for what you believe in.

To me, you are all wonderful awesome rockin-it-on musicians. And I am proud to know I've once participated in your music-learning journey.

The SFF was incepted in 1994 and has grown over the years to establish itself as a key event within Singapore’s calendar of events. Since its inception, SFF has successfully profiled Singapore’s diverse offerings of local and international food, positioning Singapore as the Food Capital in Asia.

SFF seeks to bring Singapore’s much-loved local cuisine to the world stage, by highlighting our unique local food as well as food culture and heritage.

In a similar spirit of re-creativity for want of a better expression, our students have been working hard and are excited to present you a selection of popular radio-friendly hits (both Mandarin and English) in an acoustic style.

Student pianists from Replugged Music are Cai Nianwen, Lynn Koh and Audris Ho. Special ukelele performances by student Vivian Lim who will also be our lovely emcee for the night. Curious to know who our charming student singers are? Come by and catch us from 9pm -10pm on 24th July 2009!

Relugged Music features Bevlyn Khoo: You Are My Angel

Bevlyn is a Singaporean singer-songwriter whose ability to sing an eclectic mixture of English, Mandarin, Japanese and French has commanded a solid following and respect across various ethnic groups and ages in and out of Singapore. Bevlyn’s open-mindedness to a wide spectrum of music has led to her own music often likened to a cup of fusion tea – an expression of the wild, the sensitive, the angst, and the lonely. Her lyrics explore her own experiences and the experiences that the common man can relate to.

After successfully getting into the finals for the first annual singing competition organized by The Ark Café & Tea (木船民歌餐厅)in 1998, Bevlyn was soon sought to perform as a regular part-time singer since 1999.

Bevlyn has also been an active demo-singer for many Singaporean songwriters since 2000. Her song-writing talent was spotlighted when her song-entry <<交叉路口>> successfully got into the finals for a nation-wide Mandarin-pop song-writing competition, Xin-yao-jie’2003 (新谣节’2003) and was recorded into a compilation CD sold in various record stores. This song was subsequently sold to a Taiwanese singer, Freya Lam (林凡).

In Jan 2003, Bevlyn quit her job in the social-work field to pursue her passion in music. She became a contracted a cappella singer with two groups named “Notations” and “Nanu”, which were under the umbrella of The A cappella Society of Singapore (TAS). She performed with the group in school tours to school children even to supporters in Taiwan and The Netherlands.

Besides being a wedding-singer under a group A Little Dream which she co-found, Bevlyn performs a mixture of English, Mandarin and French songs regularly with her band at various pubs and café. In 2005, Bevlyn tried her hand in acting as well in the Phua Chu Kang musical. In 2006, Bevlyn’s voice was heard over TV for the theme song <<灰姑娘>> (Cinderella) of Mediacorp’s drama serial <<钻石情缘>> (An Enchanted Life)

Bevlyn took the whole of 2007 to put together a 6-track EP album, of which 5 songs are written by herself (3 Mandarin and 2 English), and 1 newly arranged French cover ‘La Vie En Rose’ to showcase her versatility. The album titled ‘Lonely Afternoon” was launched in Jan 2008, and Bevlyn subsequently gave her first concert in Aug 2008 to a full-house audience at NUS UCC Theatre Hall.

Bevlyn is also the voice behind the sub-theme song <<保温>> for Mediacorp’s drama serial <<小娘惹>> (Little Nyonya). She has been signed to Japanese label S2S since November 2008.

“Lonely Afternoon” was awarded “Best Indie Album” at the Singapore Entertainment Awards 2009.

Her first full-length album “You Are My Angel” is released at all major record stores from April 09.

Having won numerous awards for his albums, Dick is popular in Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan. This highly-acclaimed musician has achieved regional prominence for Lion City and The Mad Chinaman.

Through Singapore Music 101, the National Library Board is going to bring you closer to the man who championed the acceptance of Asian elements in pop music. Dick will share with the audience his personal experiences in the music industry.

Thanks to Tracy our advanced level vocal class coverage on Folk/Country music took a whole new perspective.

Angeline had suggested trying a song by Carrie Underwood titled Just A Dream out and we were working on the highs and the lows and then we realised nobody really took the lyrics seriously enough. So I asked them to find out what 'Sixpence in her shoe, something borrowed, something new...' meant, and thanks to Tracy, we are enlightened.

Here's what she sent us:

Something old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.

A sixpence is a coin that was minted in Britain from 1551 to 1967. It was made of silver and worth six pennies. So this wedding tradition is definitely English, and many sources say that it began in the Victorian era.

Each item in this poem represents a good-luck token for the bride. If she carries all of them on her wedding day, her marriage will be happy. "Something old" symbolizes continuity with the bride's family and the past. "Something new" means optimism and hope for the bride's new life ahead. "Something borrowed" is usually an item from a happily married friend or family member, whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride. The borrowed item also reminds the bride that she can depend on her friends and family.

As for the colorful item, blue has been connected to weddings for centuries. In ancient Rome, brides wore blue to symbolize love, modesty, and fidelity. Christianity has long dressed the Virgin Mary in blue, so purity was associated with the color. Before the late 19th century, blue was a popular color for wedding gowns, as evidenced in proverbs like, "Marry in blue, lover be true."

And finally, a silver sixpence in the bride's shoe represents wealth and financial security. It may date back to a Scottish custom of a groom putting a silver coin under his foot for good luck. For optimum fortune, the sixpence should be in the left shoe. These days, a dime or a copper penny is sometimes substituted, and many companies sell keepsake sixpences for weddings.

Replugged Music presents: Beatboxing Course!

As with all other Replugged Music courses, we seek to create and re-create. The art of vocal percussion, as its name implies is about creating/re-creating grooves patterns, and sounds, which isn't necessarily confined to sounds from the drum set, with the human throat, tongue, mouth and voice.

It has a long history which some have researched and speculated to originate from world music, and most notably from the North Indian 'bols' and South Indian 'solkattu'.

Another likely origin, is Kouji 口技, with its earliest records in Shandong Province more than 2000 years ago during the warring states period. Kouji performance is made up of mimicry, dialogue (vocal interaction), humour and singing, which are essentially elements of Beatboxing.

It is thus not surprising that Beatboxing, a form of Vocal percussion bears some if not all of the above characteristics. Beatboxing, however, stands out on its own, and is an evolving form of street culture and art, with strong relations to the hip-hop culture. Like, Kouji, it may and often does involve some form of singing, or 'scratching' (turntablism), and mimicry or simulation of brass and string instruments.

In no time, all our attendance sheets will be marked with 9s instead of 8s.
In a way, the weekly routine of signing attendance sheets, going in and out of classrooms, cracking jokes from 'the chair', kind of is a subconscious nomination of the concept of Replugged Music as a time capsule, a place where time seems to be a lesser concern since it's all about learning and growing, ... where intentions are concerned, they stand secondary to the simple joys of loving music and creativity.

If I had known there'd be an Original Souls 2008 right from the first time we brainstormed for a showcase, I may have freaked out at the immensity and extent of work and manpower, not to mention, and the know-hows from the front to back stage. A loooong series of learning experiences accumulated till 20th December 2008 led up to the making of Original Souls.

One of the most unforgettable things i'd learnt from coordinating shows is posed as q from one of our senior students from vocal class, Zihan. :) He'd asked a very important question. " Can we hire help the next time we do a show? "

I was embarrassed but also caught by the severity of the problem. In what i was trying to handle, and envisioned in my mind, it wasn't possible without help. And we had no resources for help. It was humbling, but also very real and it wasn't hard to see that it took a lot of passion and commitment from these performers to make an event worthwhile.

It involved too much work, and i'm a tiny woman.

Original Souls would NOT be possible without every single one of you, sharing your thoughts, your dreams, coming down to humility when posed with challenges, volunteering help, and encouraging one another. It would not be possible without Nianwen, Audris, Zhaohao, Jessica, Sherman, Kangyang, Wing kee, Bishan, Meixian, Kelvin, Angeline, Ariel, Ruby, Jasmine, Jinhuan, Wanxuan, Wanpei, Liane, Alister, Allen, Emiko, Nianyan, Lena, Eli, Fion, Correne, Shihui, Bevlyn, Huibing, Jixiang, ....

So thank you, for believing in hope, and dreams, and most importantly, for having us as part of your lives as you reach out to them.

Mario Serio on Jazz Piano

A consummate pianist and keyboardist classically schooled in his home town of New York City, Mario Serio plays all genres of music masterfully. Performing in Manhattan professionally since 1978, he his living in Singapore since 1994. Well known for his sophisticated musical approach, lush harmonic sense and keen ability to accompany vocalists and instrumentalists sensitively, he remains highly in demand by the American, Latin American and Asian musical communities. Recently Mario was commissioned by the Esplanade to coordinate a series of musical jazz jam sessions in association with the Mosaic Music Festival to heighten awareness of the international festival, demonstrate improvisational concepts and present a cross section of Singapore's musical community. She's not your girl-next-door nor your diva mama.

Since i'm no fan of radio programmes, good music only reaches through friends' recommendations or by a stroke of fate if you will, that i may pick a cd i feel the vibes and affinity for.

I first heard her in Boston, in a Barnes & Noble bookstore, and nope, we don't have that in Singapore.

The storeman was playing her cd. And i wasn't actually paying much attention consciously. I was browsing through the jazz section when i realised nothing i dj-ed for myself could tear my attention away from this soulful voice i heard on the air.

The storeman seemed clueless that he was playing her music, but faithfully went about to hunt for the cd since i only mustered up the energy on that lazy Sunday when he changed discs.

It's the best music i'd heard in a while. i'd say since Corinne Bailey Rae, since i'm a big fan of free-spirited musicians, with character, musicality, soulful, and fun.

INVITATION TO “SERENADE YOUR HEART” SONGWRITING COMPETITION

As an initiation to celebrate World Heart Day on 11 & 12 October 2008, Singapore Heart Foundation (SHF) is organizing our first Songwriting Competition themed “Serenade your Heart”.

The competition is open to groups and individuals. We welcome songs of any genre (pop, rock, jazz, R&B, etc.). Songs can be submitted in MP3 form to our email address worldheartday@heart.org.sg or at our Heart Wellness Centre, Singapore Heart Foundation, 9 Bishan Place #07-01, Junction 8 (Office Tower) Singapore 579837. The closing date for submission is 19 September. Early registrations by 30 August will receive special tokens from Singapore Heart Foundation.

Online song voting will be open from 19 September to 3 October 2008. Participants with the 3 highest voted songs will get a chance to perform their song during World Heart Day 2008. SHF Song of the Year will be chosen by professional judges and announced after the performances.

The first prize for the SHF Song of the Year is $1,500. The second prize is $1,000 and the third prize is $500. All winning participants will receive a special plaque from Singapore Heart Foundation. Winning composers and music schools will be publicized in our publicity channels during and after World Heart Day 2008.

Hmm!
It's crazy because I only got more and more musicians to help me out 2 weeks before the concert, and I'm now stressing myself upside down cos other than sweating the music stuff, now I've got to send my songs to the musicians and tell them what to play and coordinate rehearsal timings amongst all, and even what food to order for them to eat. I'm like....an octopus!

But stress is always a trigger button for me. It excites me and keeps me going, and I'm actually looking very forward to the concert. I view it as a finishing line for my baby, well at least for Singapore.

Joanna Dong will be releasing her EP, a careful selection of jazz standards as well as originals. She'd also be sharing some of her more intimate moments in the music, theatre and showbiz scene with you.

In conjunction with the launch of her debut EP Lullaby Nomad, Joanna travels through her eclectic musical history, revisiting the songs that were milestones in her life.
Having tried everything from a cappella and club improvisation to musical theatre and jazz, Joanna shares with you the very first song she remembers having learnt, to her favourite choral pieces learnt in school choirs, to the song she sang at her Singapore Idol auditions.

And like the Lullaby Nomad who collects songs to sing them anew, she sings these songs from her past with the voice that defines who she is now.

Bevlyn's first EP album 'Lonely Afternoon' was released in Jan 2008, and after a series of promotional activities through radios, schools and charity functions, she is looking forward to this proper concert where you can hear and see her deliver music from the album in the University Cultural Centre Theatre. (We all know how hard it is for local musicians to find a proper venue to perform!)

Other than providing guitar and harmonica accompaniment, madboy Tien-yao will also be delivering his original songs.

You can also get a sneak preview of "No problem", a single by singer-songwriter Yet Dunhong, who will be launching his full-length album in September.

The concert promises to be an intimate evening of sharing of inspirations behind their original works, new songs, a few of their favorite covers, and mindless banter.

Is there truly an original? By what definition?

The fusion of an original with another, does it, in your definition, create another original or just duplicates with compromise?

Philosophies aside, we like Duffy's music.

Her voice isn't as big as Joss's or as animated as Alanis' or as acrobatic as Alicia Keys, Aguilera or M. Carey, but the soulful funk certainly stole my ear for a good whole hour.

I'm extremely attracted to the rawness of sounds, be it in the production, or the singer's vocal engineering, mixing etc. I love the rust in the drums, the brokenness in her vocal stylings, and the little surprises in the entire music production.

I'd like to think of Goldfrapp, Mum, Amiina, Feist and the likes of them, as a single focus in an experience. Appreciating the prettiness of the sounds, the animation in the piecing together of these collections of sounds, like a beautiful or ragged scrapbook, a journey. A personal experience that draws from you a story as you indulge in the moment, rather than just feeding you. It intrigues, stimulates the senses. It creeps into undiscovered or neglected emotions and thoughts, and enhances what we already are conscious of. Sometimes dull sometimes intense, but always real, because WE create it.

Nathan East is the co-founder of contemporary jazz group Fourplay, made up of Bob James (keys), Lee Ritenour (guitar) and Harvey Mason (drums). Their Grammy-nominated albums have earned Gold Status, and continue to too the Billboard Contemporay Jazz Charts.
